Learn techniques for working with audio feedback safely, creatively, and how to guide it without losing its characteristic liveliness and unpredictability.

Audio feedback can be an unbounded fury that screeches, thunders, and pierces the air, but within its chaos lives vast potential for dynamic sonic behaviours and colour. In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of working with feedback in an eardrum-friendly way while maintaining its liveliness. Topics will include tools and techniques for safely and creatively interacting with audio feedback, notable feedback artists, works, and instruments, and non-audio uses of feedback. Participants will have opportunities for hands-on experience with feedback using microphones, speakers, contact mics and exciters, feedback instruments, and various processing tools. Working with feedback suggests an entangled understanding of sound that may be of particular interest to artists working in sound art, media art, and experimental music.

About the Instructor
Dave Riedstra is a Guelph-based artist who works with quiet sound. A long-time composer and performer of experimental music, over the past 10 years his work increasingly incorporates sound sculpture, transient public art, instrument building, coding, and other activities. Throughout all of these, he uses sound to generate arrangements that respond to those listening to them in order to cultivate sensitivity to everyday entanglement. Riedstra is a frequent technical and artistic collaborator; recent projects include the creation of a new string resonator instrument with Gayle Young and Mitch Renaud and the development of software for gestural control of live audio spatialization with James Harley. Riedstra’s artistic and academic work has been presented across Canada, the UK, Europe, and online.
